petrichor

noun

The distinctive earthy scent produced when rain falls on dry ground. The smell the earth releases when it drinks.

Nuance

A precise word for something everyone knows but few can name: coined in 1964 from Greek petra (stone) and ichor (the fluid of the gods).

The first petrichor of summer reached her before she even heard the rain.
